How Much Does Solar Panel Cleaning Cost in San Diego? (And Why It's Worth It)

The short answer

National home-cost guides put professional solar panel cleaning at about $10 to $20 per panel, or roughly $150 to $500 for a typical home system. At Nomadic Home Services, residential solar panel cleaning starts at $250 and commercial service starts at $500. Your final price depends on how many panels you have, how easy your roof is to reach, how many stories it is, and how dirty the panels are. Every cleaning includes a safety inspection of your system, and that inspection is a big part of why regular cleaning is worth it.

How much does solar panel cleaning cost per panel?

Published national averages land in the same neighborhood. One national cost guide lists $10 to $20 per panel, or $150 to $500 total, and notes that most cleaning pros have a minimum fee of $100 or more (national solar panel cleaning cost guide, 2026). Its breakdown by system size:

  • 5–10 panels: $50–$200

  • 10–15 panels: $100–$300

  • 15–25 panels: $150–$500

  • 25–35 panels: $250–$700

  • 35–45+ panels: $350–$900+

Another national guide puts a single cleaning at $200 to $500 (national solar maintenance cost guide, updated May 2026).

These are national numbers, not San Diego quotes, so use them as a sanity check. Our residential starting price of $250 sits inside those ranges, and it includes a safety inspection with every cleaning.

Per panel or per job: which pricing is better for you?

You'll see both. Some companies multiply a per-panel rate by your panel count; others quote a price for the whole job. Ours starts at $250 for a home, and the final number depends on your panel count, roof access, stories, and soiling. Here's how to compare quotes fairly:

  • Small systems usually hit a minimum. Setting up a water system, ladders, and fall protection takes time no matter how few panels you have, so a low per-panel rate on a small system often ends up at the minimum anyway.

  • Ask what's included. Some quotes cover only the glass. National guides note that inspections are often priced separately, at $150 to $350 when they aren't bundled in (cost guide). With us, the inspection is part of every cleaning.

  • Compare the total, not the rate. What matters is the out-the-door price for your roof and everything that comes with it.

What changes the price of a solar panel cleaning?

Four things move most quotes up or down.

1. Panel count

More panels take more time. Count yours from your monitoring app or install paperwork before you call for a faster, more accurate quote.

2. Roof access

Steep pitches, tile roofs, and arrays split across several roof sections take longer to set up and clean safely, and can require extra equipment (cost guide). Tile is common across North County and needs careful footing.

3. Stories

A single-story ranch home is a different job than a two- or three-story home on a hillside. More height means more ladder work and fall protection setup.

4. Soiling

Light dust rinses off quickly. Baked-on bird droppings, a thick dust film from Santa Ana winds, or residue from nearby groves, horse properties, or construction takes more soaking and gentle brushing. If panels haven't been cleaned in years, the first visit usually takes the longest.

What shouldn't change: the method

A lower price should never mean a rougher method. We use deionized pure water and soft brushes, and we never pressure wash panels. Pure water dries without mineral spots, which matters in a county with hard tap water (see our post on hard water stains on solar panels). What's included in a solar panel cleaning?

With Nomadic Home Services, every cleaning comes with a safety inspection. While we're on the roof, we look over the array for the kinds of problems national lab maintenance guides tell owners to watch for:

  • Damaged or chewed wiring. Federal maintenance guidance calls out wiring chewed by squirrels and other rodents, and wires pinched or rubbing against module frames (NREL/Sandia PV O&M Best Practices Guide).

  • Loose connections and signs of arcing. A U.S. Department of Energy national lab checklist includes inspecting for loose wiring and signs of electrical arcing (Pacific Northwest National Laboratory).

  • Cracked glass and damaged panels. The national lab guide flags modules with cracked glass for testing and notes that a cracked or peeling backsheet can let water in (NREL/Sandia guide).

  • Nests, pests, and critter damage. The same guides recommend checking for animal infestations and removing nests from around the array (PNNL; NREL/Sandia guide).

  • Visible signs of overheating or burn marks (hot spots). Burn marks or other visible signs of overheating can point to a defect, and national lab guidance links catching hot spots early with spotting potential fire risks (NREL/Sandia guide). An international module-failure report describes how a shaded panel with a hidden wiring defect can heat up within seconds and may char or even burn (IEA PVPS, 2025).

  • Loose mounts and corrosion (PNNL).

If we find something that needs an electrician or your installer, we'll tell you what we saw so you can get it handled.

How often should you budget for solar panel cleaning?

National guides generally suggest cleaning and inspecting panels once or twice a year, and more often in dusty areas, near heavy pollen or birds, or where pollution is high (cost guide; maintenance cost guide). One national guide estimates total yearly solar maintenance, including cleaning and inspection, at $390 to $720 (maintenance cost guide).

For most North County homes, we recommend twice a year: once in spring before the long dry summer, and once after summer and fall dust. Homes near the coast, farms, construction, or with lots of bird activity may need more. We explain the timing in how often to clean solar panels.

To budget, multiply your quoted price by the number of visits you plan each year. If you want regular service, ask about our plans: One-Time, Standard (twice a year), Advanced (three times a year), and Premier (quarterly). We'll quote plan pricing for your home.

Is solar panel cleaning worth it?

Yes. Think of it like an oil change for your car. You don't skip an oil change because the engine still runs fine today. You do it to catch problems early and help the engine last. Solar panel cleaning works the same way. Here's why.

1. Every cleaning includes a safety inspection

This is the most important reason. A rooftop solar system is live electrical equipment sitting in the sun, wind, and weather year-round. Chewed wires, loose connections, and burn marks or other signs of overheating (hot spots) usually can't be seen from the ground, and national lab guidance ties problems like these to arc faults and fire risk (NREL/Sandia guide). An international solar research group's report on module failures also notes that faults in a panel's junction box can lead to fires (IEA PVPS, Degradation and Failure Modes in New Photovoltaic Cell and Module Technologies, 2025).

Catching a problem early is how you keep a small repair from turning into a disaster. That's why safety is the center of how we work. Austin has completed ISCA PV Fire Safety Training, our team is OSHA 30-Hour trained, and in November 2025 we received the Jason Knight Safety Progress Award.

2. Clean panels run cooler and last longer

Dirt doesn't just block light. Uneven soiling, like bird droppings, can lead to localized hot-spot failures, according to national lab maintenance guidance (NREL/Sandia guide). Research on module failures explains why: when part of a cell is shaded, that cell can start to dissipate power as heat instead of producing it (IEA PVPS, 2025).

Even an ordinary dust layer adds heat. A peer-reviewed field study comparing dusty and clean panels found that dust increased module temperatures (Effect of dust accumulation on the performance of photovoltaic modules, 2023). And heat matters for lifespan: after eight years in the field, Sandia National Laboratories found a strong link between panel degradation and the temperature and UV exposure the panels experienced (Sandia, Degradation of Fielded PV Modules in Three Climates after Eight Years).

So even when your panels only look a little dusty, keeping them clean helps them run cooler and protects your investment over the long run.

3. More power is the bonus

Clean panels also produce more. Federal maintenance guidance notes plainly that soiling reduces the energy output of a solar array (NREL/Sandia guide). For us, that's a nice bonus on top of the real reasons to clean: safety and a longer life for your system. If you want to learn more, see does solar panel cleaning increase efficiency?

And there's one more benefit: you stay off the ladder. Rooftop work is risky without the right training and gear (see Is Solar Panel Cleaning Safe?).
