Should I Clean My Solar Panels Myself? Why North County Homeowners Should Hire a Pro

Quick answer: No. Homeowners should not clean their own solar panels. Your solar array is a live electrical system that can't simply be switched off while the sun is shining, and it usually sits on a roof, where falls are a serious risk. The wrong water, soap or tools can also damage the glass. Keep your panels clean on a regular schedule by hiring a trained, certified solar cleaning professional. Call Nomadic Home Services at (619) 333-6858.

Hi, I'm Austin Moyer. My partner Mya and I run Nomadic Home Services in Escondido, and solar panel cleaning is the heart of what we do. "Can I just do this myself?" is one of the most common questions we hear. We love that homeowners want clean panels, because regular cleaning matters. But our answer is always the same: please leave it to a trained pro. Here's why.

Why shouldn't homeowners clean their own solar panels?

Two big reasons: electricity and height.

  • It's a live electrical system. Solar panels make power whenever light hits them. Water, wiring, connectors and damaged equipment don't mix, and a homeowner usually can't tell when something is unsafe.

  • Roof height and fall risk. Panels sit on tile or shingle roofs, and wet glass and roofing are slippery. Ladders and roofs are a real hazard without fall protection and training.

  • Panels are easy to damage. Walking on panels, scraping, or using the wrong products can scratch glass or harm the system.

Professional solar cleaners train for exactly these risks. Read more on whether solar panel cleaning is safe.

Can I clean my solar panels with a pressure washer?

No. A pressure washer can force water past frame seals, damage glass and coatings, and harm wiring and junction boxes. Rain doesn't hit with that kind of force, and panels aren't designed for it. Professionals use gentle water flow and soft brushes made for solar glass. See can pressure washing damage property?

Can I clean my solar panels with Dawn dish soap?

We don't recommend it. Soap can leave a film on the glass that attracts dust, and products not made for solar glass can conflict with manufacturer guidelines. Professional crews rely on purified water and soft brushes, so nothing is left behind.

Can I clean my solar panels with tap water?

Tap and sprinkler water in much of North County carry minerals that dry into white spots on the glass. Over time those spots can bake on and become hard to remove. That's why trained crews use purified water that dries spot-free. If you already see chalky spots, read about hard water stains on solar panels.

Can I clean solar panels with vinegar or Windex?

No. Household glass cleaners and acidic or ammonia-based products aren't made for solar glass and its coatings, and they can leave residue. Using the wrong products is also a common warranty concern; see does solar panel cleaning void the warranty?

How does a professional clean solar panels safely?

A trained crew brings the right training, equipment and process:

  1. Safety first, with fall protection and an understanding of PV electrical hazards.

  2. Purified water that rinses clean and dries spot-free.

  3. Soft brushes made for solar glass, never abrasive pads or scrapers.

  4. No pressure washing and no harsh chemicals.

  5. A trained eye. We look for debris buildup, nesting birds, and visible signs of overheating or burn marks, and let you know so you can contact your installer.

How often should I have my solar panels professionally cleaned?

Regularly. Dust, pollen, bird droppings and grime build up between cleanings, and light rain rarely washes them away (see does rain clean solar panels?). We'll recommend a schedule for your home, and our page on how often to clean solar panels explains what drives frequency. For businesses, HOAs and property managers, we offer recurring commercial plans too.
